Many clients come to me seeking advice and realize all the runaround and hoops they have to jump through just to get an initial price  below the Canadian Automobile Manufacturers are suggesting on there websites. Why? Because they want the New Car Dealer wants to make the most on YOU, the client each and everytime. When I was starting as a salesman in 1990 we were given an acroynm for client who said they wanted (FLEET) pricing Full List Each Everytime Time, hence no discount if possible, there was no internet or websites, we had control. Today the story has changed but somewhat is the same, How?  The Canadian Automobile Manufacturers give direct to dealer incentives that are not advertised and that are given at given point in a month and to make matters even harder only some of the canadian dealers get those special rebates, because they are related to selling a certain number of cars within a certain period in a month or quarter……so how can a client actually shop where you will get the best for your New Car Family Budget?

New constraints the last 12 months: In the last year Japan has suffered many natural disasters that have affected the world supply of  Parts to build cars in North America, Such as th Honda Civic 2012 or the Toyota Corolla as well as The Lexus Line and Acura MDX all assembled in Ontario,Canada.

The result Higher price margins amongst dealers because the availability is short and if you really want it you will pay is their thinking, and they are correct, I recently had a friend call me to acquire a 2012 Honda Fit made Exclusively in Japan 100%, well guess what they paid full price plus had to wait 3 months to maybe get the car, which has yet to arrive since October 30th 2011. The Only good thing is its impossible to get taken buying one as the Mark up is only 900$ . Honda Canada keeps the Margin Low so that the MSRP is competitive with the market competitors in that segment, such as the Kia Rio 2012 , Hyundai Accent 2012, Chevrolet Sonic 2012, and Toyota Yaris to name a few other options, although if your Honda Fit 2012 is on finance or lease you will pay the highest interest rate in Canada out of  all the cars in that segment.

So Reserve your SUV, Car or Truck now for arrival when you need it, you may even get a greater discount as the dealer will order it specifically for you and have no interest fees to pay therefore reducing cost as well as collecting a healthy Holdback that ussualy goes towards that purpose.

Don’t be fooled by the market mumurs and expect more deals and discount this is as good as it gets although no one has a crystal ball with a low inventory there is no pressure to reduce pricing.

Often dealers such as Honda receive special incentives ex. last month for repeat clients such as civic owners.There was a 1000$ cash rebate that was not advertised and discriminated others who drove other brands, as well if you bought a 5 speed another 500$ was available, most people would have stopped there had they known, but were is your 4% discount?? Most people were so happy they didn’t ask for it. thats 800$ gone bye bye.

Be careful when shopping a car, there is no free lunch…..you buy a car every 4-5 years they sell them every hour, Don’t be fooled by who is getting who.                                                                                                                                                            If they say Yes to the Deal,     THEY ARE MAKING MONEY AND THAT’ S OK.

The question is how much are you allowing them to make on you in these FRUGAL TIMES.

Once you have secured your final selection of car brand and model, pricing remains your final Step prior to financing  and insurance office (F and I) dept as its known in car  lingo.

GETTING THE BEST PRICE ON A CAR IS TIME CONSUMING , SO BE READY TO SPEND A FEW HOURS ON THE PHONE this will AVOID going to dealers  who are more rigid on price policy, and going for nothing.

You, Must be clear on the exact package you desire, Meaning the MINIMUM you have assessed you NEED.Write your wish list on an Excel sheet on top and Make 5 Columns that will represent the 5 establishment you will get quotes from on the Phone.

On another sheet  make 3 column which will represent the Dealers you will Visit based on the lowest 3 prices you got by phone.

Key things to ask for when you ask them to provide pricing in both scenarios, and make it clear that if they make a mistake you are gone, no I’m sorry , it was an oversight, blah blah blah!

1. Transport and Preparation Fees in the Selling Price, Lease payment and or Finance payment.

2. Acquisition fees (Created to make profit for the business office) or F and I department.

3. licensing fees ( getting the tags) many dealers add a surcharge for the service ( up to an extra 20$)

4. Any Special recycling fees for tires , are they included?

5. Air conditioning tax

6. All Provincial, State and Governmental sales taxes.

Ask for a key in hand price, no surprises, many at this point will ask if you were burnt in a past transaction because of your strategy and aggressive handling of  the whole scenario, simply say its not an emotional buy its a necessity and rational purchase, either you want to sell it or don’t. If you do then lets move on but don’t wast my time, there are many other dealers out there who will gladly accept  my business.

If the dealer gives you the same price as on the Internet, Don’t be shy to tell him, as they will surely try to test your plan and see if you walk the walk and not only Talk it.

Don’t forget although our strategy or plan to get the pricing is rigid, that you always attract bees  with Honey, So be nice!

If the sales people you get on the phone don’t respond to your needs call back, and work with another one.What ever you do, always give your first name and avoid revealing your Family Name  or Telephone number, use a * service from your Telephone distributor to hide you number on call display.

A well trained salespersons response will be: Are you calling me from Home or Office? Tell them it doesn’t matter.,this way they can’t ask for the number. 2nd possible reply may be: I’m not at my desk now, while I verify Inventory and in coming stock,  may I have your Number so I can call you back with the information you requested. Simply answer, no problem, I’ll call you back in five minutes, does that give you enough time?

Meanwhile you can call the other dealers you had selected to call, in your price strategy.

Eventually you will have your price and not all dealers will as difficult as my depiction, but at least we cover some key point in this portion of,  Tips to get the best deal.

Using a car broker removes the Guessing part of the game. The Best way to locate a car broker is through word of mouth as they rarely advertise athough it they sometimes do under Car Broker or Personal Shopper

The advantage of using a Broker is you remain annonymous, as sometimes you may be treated differently if you are known and in the public eye or you don’t want to give your number and receive phone calls daily to see when you’re going to make a decision..
